Aged to Perfection: An interview with debut novelist Niloufar Lamakan

In the Living in 3D Wise Women series, I talk with debut novelist Niloufar about her age-defying 60-year-old protagonist Sophia with her daunting year-long dating pledge and the comedy that ensues.

This week I am happy to introduce my readers to debut novelist Niloufar Lamakan to the occasional Living in 3D Wise Women podcast and video series. I interview women who show how it is never too late to unfold into our bloom. Their talent, perspectives and insights offer inspiration for late-bloomers or anyone at any age who is unfurling into her truest, most beautiful, wild and authentic self. I have been so privileged in my life to have many women guides, teachers and inspiration in the realms of creativity, healing, and self-discovery and it’s a joy to bring their wisdom to my readers. You can find the previous interviews linked below.

Niloufar Lamakan, author of Aged to Perfection

Niloufar Lamakan is an Iranian-born author and artist. She moved to the UK as a child and has lived in Islington, London most of her life. She came to writing after careers in tech, design, art, and property. Her debut novel, Aged to Perfection, won the Commendation Award at the Comedy Women In Print and was a finalist at the Page Turner Awards. The novel also landed Niloufar on the cover of the Saturday Telegraph recently

Niloufar writes bold, spicy, romantic comedies that are unapologetically age-defiant. Her art also explores the connections between age, identity, and society’s perceptions of beauty. When she’s not painting or writing, you’ll find her on the dancefloor.

In this conversation, we talk about her newest incarnation, as a debut novelist. I thoroughly enjoyed Aged to Perfection, which is so very funny, unapologetically age-defiant, and shatters stereotypes of older women. Think “Bridget Jones's Diary” meets “And Just Like That” but bolder and spicier.

In this conversation we dive into Niloufar’s creative journey, particularly:

  • Why she wants to banish the phrase "age appropriate"

  • Why she created a different kind of older heroine

  • How her creative writing journey began

  • Her path to getting published with One More Chapter, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing.

As you’ll hear us mention, Niloufar and I were introduced by the author, writing teacher and editor Deana Luchia, whom you can find at her website Write to The End. Deana, who was my developmental editor for a pivotal draft of my own novel still in revision and a long-time friend from my years living in Malta, will join us in a future conversation about creative writing and publishing. I’m very much looking forward to that.

You can order Niloufar’s novel on Amazon here.

If you’re a debut novelist (as I aspire to be) I’d love to feature your story on the path to getting published; let’s chat and inspire each other.
